Eight used one penny red-brown imperforates, 1841-1852, line-engraved, cancelled with BARRED NUMERAL obliterators, except at least two that carry the earlier MALTESE CROSS.
WHAT A BARRED NUMERAL TELLS YOU. The barred numeral replaced the Maltese Cross from 1844. The number inside the bars identifies the post office that cancelled it, so each of these can in principle be traced to a town. Collectors of postal history buy penny reds for the office numbers as much as for the stamps, and an uncommon office can be worth more than the stamp under it.
MARGINS. On imperforates the margins drive the value more than anything else - a stamp with paper clear of the design on all four sides is worth several times one cut into the frame line. Margins vary across this group and buyers should judge from the photographs.
NO PLATE NUMBERS EXIST ON THESE. Plate numbers were not engraved into British stamps until the 1858 redesign that put check letters in all four corners. These are the earlier design and carry no printed plate number. They can be plated by matching plate characteristics against published studies, but that has not been done here and is specialist work.
