Double‑Walled Copper Water Vessel, with Domed Lid, Chain, and Riveted Handle
Northern Afghanistan / Persian Khorasan region
£1800.00£1200.00
A substantial hand‑hammered copper water vessel, constructed with a double‑walled body incorporating an internal hammered liner to create an insulating cavity for cooling water. The vessel rises from a bulbous base to a narrow neck fitted with its original domed lid, secured by a forged chain.
The arched carry handle is attached with hand‑riveted plates, and the vessel retains its characteristic flared pouring spout, neatly brazed to the upper body. The base and interior exhibit deep hammering consistent with pre‑industrial manufacture, and the surface retains an attractive, untouched patina.
Such double‑walled vessels were used across the Persian and Afghan regions for the storage and cooling of water during travel and household use. Complete examples with original fittings are increasingly scarce. A highly authentic and evocative piece of traditional metalwork.
