1867-83 QV 5s Rose, Surface-Printed High Value, Corner Letters E-E
£189.00
Queen Victoria five shillings rose, surface-printed high value, used. Corner letters E in each corner.
What it is. One of the classic Victorian high values, printed by De La Rue with a Greek-key border and the Queen’s head in a pearled oval. Two catalogue families share this design — SG 126/127 (1867–83, watermark Maltese Cross) and SG 180/181 (1883–84, watermark Large Anchor) — and only the watermark separates them. Whichever it proves to be, a used example catalogues in the hundreds of pounds.
What supports the price. Perforations complete on all four sides, with a few teeth slightly blunted along the top and foot. Centring sound: the design sits a touch left and high, but all four frame lines are clear of the perforations. Colour strong and bright, a full carmine-rose with no fading. Paper clean, with no toning or foxing visible from the face.
What holds it back. The cancellation is heavy: a large circular datestamp across the right side and lower centre, with further strikes at the upper left. It obscures a good part of the design and is the reason this is not priced as a fine copy.
Not checked. The watermark has not been checked in a tray, so the catalogue number is not stated. The back has not been examined, so thins, repairs and re-perforation cannot be ruled out. No certificate; for a stamp of this value we recommend one.
About this description. Written from high-resolution scans of the actual item, with AI assistance, and not examined in hand by an accredited expert. Catalogue numbers, plates, shades and overprint types are indicative and not guaranteed, and faults such as thins, repairs, regumming or re-perforation do not always show in a scan. For anything valuable we recommend an opinion from the BPA or the RPSL. The photograph is of the stamp you will receive.
Your rights. This is an online sale, so you have 14 days from delivery to cancel and return the item for a refund, and your statutory rights are not affected.
